Why Learn Reiki? These Four Reasons

Mikao Usui, the founder and creator of Usui Reiki, said that Reiki “is the secret art of inviting happiness. The miraculous cure for all disease.” His dream was to put Reiki in the hands of every human being who wanted it. In fact, his teachings have spread around the world. Countless numbers of people in nearly every country find Reiki on a regular basis. What about Reiki draws these people? Is it truly the art of inviting happiness?

Seattle Healing: Why Learn Reiki?Reiki became known in the West as primarily a healing art that originated in Japan. For many years, Reiki was taught as exactly that—a healing art. What most people don’t know is that Reiki is a healing art with a twist. It comes with a fully loaded toolbox, a toolbox that’s filled with mindfulness, healthful living, and self-discovery. Reiki incorporates all of these things with energy work to create a system that supports the integration of mind, body, and spirit. This integration leads to a greater sense of clarity, purpose, and self-awareness. With these tools, you can craft your life into the life of your dreams.

1. For Clarity and Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a word that seems to be on everyone’s lips lately. In his book Mindfulness for Beginners, Jon Kabat-Zinn, Ph.D., defines mindfulness as “awareness, cultivated by paying attention in a sustained way: on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally.”

From your very first class in Reiki, you learn about meditating with the breath and the power of being present. It is only in the present moment that you can find true healing, transformation, or clarity. When the attention gets lost in the past or the future, anxiety, stress, and fear are created. When people get stuck there, they invite disease and depression into their lives. However, using the mindfulness tools that come with your Reiki training, you can combat disease and depression as well as master the art of being present.

2. For Better Health

Another thing that draws people to learning Reiki is the tools it offers for healthy living. Millions of people suffer from stress and anxiety. Whether meditating, receiving a treatment, or practicing self-treatment, Reiki offers relief from these two negative factors. Reiki also can help calm you, which promotes better sleep and a more positive attitude. When you allow yourself to relax and stress melts away, you’re left with a more open and clear mind. In this state, depression and the negative aspects of life seem to fade away.

In a recent article for The Reiki Times, Dr. Mehmet Oz had this to say about Reiki and energy medicine in general: “I know first-hand the amazing miracles we can achieve with western medicine. But I also know that for centuries, people around the world have developed alternative therapies to treat the body, mind, and spirit.”

Through these alternative therapies, you can learn to experience health in a whole new way—health that brings all aspects of the Self together. When you pull together all of these aspects of self, the authentic self is then supported and can begin to find expression in the outer world.

3. To Make a Change

Seattle Healing: Why Learn Reiki?Transformation is another reason people want to learn Reiki. When you take your own well-being into hand by applying the tools, techniques, and principles of Reiki to your life, a path of self-discovery opens before you.

Usui Sensei spent most of his life studying spirituality, medicine, philosophy, and various healing arts. He was a seeker of knowledge and enlightenment. The legacy that he left behind, Usui Shiki Ryoho, can be seen as a guidebook for those who seek not just physical healing, but healing on all levels—mental, emotional, and spiritual. Through this type of healing and subsequent self-discovery, you can uncover your authentic self, the part of you that’s whole and complete, the part of you that lives in peace and dances in the mysteries of life.

4. For Helping Others

Finally, many people want to learn Reiki to help others. Reiki is not a self-serving art or a one trick pony. When you learn Reiki, it’s for life, and it’s meant to be shared with others. If you know anyone who suffers from chronic pain, depression, sleep disorders, or any other life-altering condition, Reiki can help in most situations. It might not be a cure all; however, when used in conjunction with sound medical treatment, Reiki can help in ways you may not even imagine. In fact, over the past few years, the western medical world has begun to open up to Reiki and other complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies.

In a recent article published by the International Association of Reiki Practitioners (IARP), information stemming from several surveys starting in 2010 reveals some of the new thoughts and attitudes toward CAM therapies.

The articles states, “In Canada, complementary and alternative therapies are used by nearly 70 percent of the populace for wellness and as a complement to their medical care.” The article also states, “A survey done in 2010 of U.S. hospitals indicates that 85 percent of responding hospitals indicated patient demand as the primary rationale in offering CAM services. And 70 percent of survey respondents stated clinical effectiveness as the top reason.”

With the popularity of Reiki growing, more and more research is being done on a clinical level. What is known at the moment is that Reiki has affected a great many people. With just the touch of the hand, you can bring relief, healing, and transformation to yourself and those in need.
